In 1984, while working on air at KRQR (CBS-FM) in San Francisco, I heard about a new TV series at KGO TV (ABC) that was looking for a host. They wanted someone connected to the local SF music scene, someone who could interview rock stars, and write the show as well. After auditions, I found out I got the gig! I was on my way to turning what I did on the radio into a weekly show. I had already interviewed lots of bands and rock stars, along with other celebs, but doing it on TV was a whole new experience.
The TV series was called "San Francisco Hot Rock" For a full season on ABC, I hosted a 90 minute TV show filled with music videos, rock star interviews, and had an incredible time. This series had guest stars and visits from artists like Grace Slick, Huey Lewis, Journey, Van Halen, Night Ranger, The Pretenders, Eddie Money, Y&T, Christine Mcvie, Boy George, Cyndie Lauper, and so many more. Even Weird Al did a show with me!
Although it faded away after one season (cancelled for reruns of let's make a deal!), the series was a career turning point for me. During the show's run, I learned how to do live TV, how it's produced, shot, lit, edited- my band even did the music for the show's theme! This is the program I really learned how to do TV and on camera narrator work from.
Today, 20 something years later- after much urging from rock fans who want to see rare footage of The SF music scene in the 80s, I am remastering some of these shows from the vault. Here' you'll find highlights from the 30 shows we produced. As you scroll through these pages, I hope you'll get a glimse of one of your favorite artists, in footage not seen since 1984. Enjoy!
Here's the Very first commercial for the show's Debut in January of 1984...
